March 2023
EMC RE is proud of its commitment to the environment. Whilst the nature of our business necessitates international travel we monitor our carbon footprint carefully.
In 2022 we offset our carbon footprint through donating to a reforestation project in Kenya (VCS certified). The Kenyan reforestation project has planted over 150,000 trees in the Great Rift Valley over the past 10 years and is currently planting 45,000 trees in three new forest locations. Throughout each reforestation area bee hives are put in place not only to provide an important alternative income source for the local community but to also help farmers and small holders with crop and fruit pollination therefore providing an essential ecosystem service of supporting food production.
According to the United Nations the world is losing 10 million hectares of forest each year due to deforestation - about the size of Iceland. The effects of deforestation are wide reaching:
Major climate change: Increase in temperature, pollution and greenhouse gas levels.
Desertification and soil erosion.
Decrease in groundwater level.
Loss of plant and animal species and biodiversity
In order to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests in 2012 The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests. Countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The Kenyan reforestation project planted 2,000 trees on International Day of Forests 2022 and on 21st December 2022, Kenya’s President launched a nation-wide tree planting campaign to raise Kenya’s tree cover to 30% by 2032.
