08 Dec 2016 - Cameroon (Yaounde)

James Whitmee

I have travelled by road from Kribi to the capital of Cameroon, Yaounde. It takes around five hours and the roads are not as good here as in Cote d'Ivoire - mainly single lane and with a lot of trucks, most of the slower ones carrying enormous hardwood trees for export.

Yaounde is at a much higher altitude than Douala and is cooler, being built over a series of hills. I was due to stay in the Mont Febe, but when I arrived I did not have a room, so I stayed is an apartment-hotel in Bastos.

Today I have been looking at the office market. Development has mainly been local and relatively small-scale, generally up to 3,000-4,000 sq m. Some of the larger corporates, eg Huawei, are in converted apartment buildings.

I need to get to Douala tomorrow and there are surprisingly few flights, and the train service between Yaounde and Douala is currently suspended following a major accident in October. It looks like I will have another long trip by road.
